FAQs
The making
Yes. John forges, finishes, and hallmarks every piece himself in the Yallingup workshop, using traditional metalsmithing techniques refined over more than 50 years at the bench. Most works are one-of-one and the rest are limited releases. The subtle marks of the hand are intentional. They’re what make your piece unlike any other in the world.
Often, no. Most works are singular, and once a piece finds its owner it won’t be repeated. John does return to his favourite motifs across new works, though, from wrens and gum leaves to ocean stories, and new pieces leave the bench regularly. Get in touch and we’ll tell you whether something similar is in the gallery or on its way.
Our focus is the current collection of one-of-one and limited works. The workshop occasionally takes on custom work when capacity allows, but it’s the exception rather than the rule. If you have something in mind, contact us and we’ll give you an honest answer about what’s possible and when.
In many cases, yes. A diamond, sapphire, ruby, or gold rivet can be added to an existing John Miller Design piece, and it’s a lovely way to mark an anniversary or a milestone. Contact us with a photo of your piece and we’ll confirm what’s possible.
Sizing and fit
Ring sizing is best done in person, so visit us in Yallingup or Broome, or ask a local jeweller to measure you. Australia uses alphabetical ring sizes measured from the leading edge, and a wide band sits more snugly than a narrow one on the same finger, so it helps to tell us which design you’re considering. String, ribbon, and strips of paper aren’t accurate, so skip the home hacks.
You’ll also find measuring instructions and international conversions in our printable sizing guide.
Lay a ruler straight across the top of your wrist at the wrist bone and note the width. As a guide, 48mm is petite, 58mm is average for women, and 65mm is average for men. Most cuffs can be adjusted slightly, so a near fit can usually be fine-tuned.
Measure the inside diameter of a bangle that already fits you well. If you don’t own one, borrow a friend’s, call into one of our galleries, or contact us and we’ll walk you through it.
Cuffs can usually be adjusted a little either way. For rings and bangles it depends on the design, so if you’re unsure about fit, ask before you buy. We’re glad to advise on sizing before any piece ships.
Delivery and returns
We dispatch orders from the Yallingup atelier via Australia Post and send you tracking details once your piece ships.
Yes, we deliver worldwide. International orders travel by express courier with DHL Express, and shipping costs and estimated timeframes are shown at checkout. Duties and taxes may apply depending on your country’s regulations.
If your purchase isn’t quite right, contact us promptly and we’ll talk through the next steps. Because each piece is handmade and many are one-of-one, we assess returns case by case, with fairness to you and care for the integrity of the piece.
If you’re uncertain about sizing or anything else, ask before you buy. We’d rather get it right the first time.
Caring for your jewellery
Three habits will keep it at its best. Take it off before swimming, gardening, or heavy manual work. Store it in a soft pouch or a lined jewellery box so it doesn’t rub against other pieces. For cleaning, a soft cloth covers regular upkeep; for a deeper clean, wash in warm water with mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely.
It’s by design. Hand-wrought gold and silver develop a natural patina with daily wear, a surface character that’s unique to you and the life you live in the piece. If you prefer a brighter finish, a gentle polish with a soft cloth will bring it back.
